In the Carnot engine, which achieves the maximum efficiency between two reservoirs of fixed temperatures, the total change in entropy is zero. The observation can be generalized by considering any reversible cyclic process consisting of many Carnot cycles. Observation:

  • This study examined the longitudinal, session-by-session association between emotional processing levels and clinical symptoms in a depression case.

Findings:

  • A significant negative association was found between the intensity of clinical symptoms and the level of emotional processing in the same session (r = -.71, p < .001).
  • No significant association was observed between emotional processing and symptoms in the preceding (r = -.37, p = .101) or subsequent (r = -.29, p = .180) sessions.
  • An increase in emotional processing corresponded with a shift from maladaptive to more adaptive emotions.

Implications:

  • Emotional processing is associated with therapeutic change, but may not necessarily precede it on a session-by-session basis.
  • These findings highlight the importance of in-session emotional dynamics for therapeutic progress.
  • Given the exploratory nature, results should be interpreted with caution, suggesting further research is warranted.
