Summary
Hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) therapy did not show significant effects on post-concussion syndrome (PCS) symptoms in this review. Further large-scale clinical trials are needed to confirm these findings for concussion recovery.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Hyperbaric Medicine
- Evidence-Based Medicine
Background:
- Post-concussion syndrome (PCS) presents a complex challenge with limited effective treatments.
- Hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) therapy, involving exposure to increased atmospheric pressure and oxygen, has been explored as a potential intervention for various neurological conditions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To systematically review and meta-analyze the available randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the efficacy of HBO therapy in patients with post-concussion syndrome.
- To determine if HBO therapy offers a significant benefit over sham treatment for PCS symptom reduction.
Main Methods:
- A comprehensive literature search was conducted across multiple electronic databases (Cochrane, EBSCOhost, Embase, Ovid MEDLINE, PubMed, Web of Science) up to early 2016.
- Four eligible RCTs were included in the meta-analysis, with data extraction and risk of bias assessment performed independently by two reviewers.
- Statistical analysis used Review Manager 5.3, estimating standardized mean difference (SMD) or mean difference (MD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) using fixed or random effects models.
Main Results:
- The meta-analysis found no statistically significant differences in Rivermead Post-Concussion Symptoms Questionnaire scores between different oxygen doses (MD=1.23; 95% CI, -3.47-5.94; P>0.05).
- No significant differences were observed in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist (PCL) scores between groups receiving different oxygen doses (SMD=0.12; 95% CI, -0.31-0.54; P>0.05) or between HBO and sham groups (SMD=-0.13, 95% CI, -0.80-0.53; P>0.05).
- Neurobehavioral symptoms also showed no significant improvement with HBO therapy compared to sham treatment (SMD=-1.00, 95% CI, -2.58-0.58; P>0.05).
Conclusions:
- Current evidence suggests that hyperbaric oxygenation therapy does not provide a significant therapeutic effect for post-concussion syndrome compared to sham interventions.
- The findings underscore the need for well-designed, large-scale clinical trials with robust control and sham groups to definitively assess HBO therapy's role in PCS management.

Treatment for Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension: Oxygen Therapy for Respiratory Failure
625
Oxygen therapy has emerged as a significant tool in enhancing the quality of life for patients suffering from pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). While this therapy has principally been studied on patients with significant hypoxemia, this therapeutic approach helps prevent potential organ damage and can be administered in the comfort of one's home.
Oxygen therapy is vital in increasing and maintaining blood oxygen levels in PAH patients. As a result, it aids in reducing fatigue,...

Gene Therapy
27.6K
Gene therapy is a technique where a gene is inserted into a person’s cells to prevent or treat a serious disease. The added gene may be a healthy version of the gene that is mutated in the patient, or it could be a different gene that inactivates or compensates for the patient’s disease-causing gene. For example, in patients with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) due to a mutation in the gene for the enzyme adenosine deaminase, a functioning version of the gene can be...

Oxygen Transport in the Blood
6.7K
Hemoglobin (Hb) is a crucial molecule in the human body, consisting of four polypeptide chains, each bound to an iron-containing heme group. This unique structure enables hemoglobin to bind to oxygen, with each molecule capable of combining with four molecules of oxygen, leading to rapid and reversible oxygen loading. When fully loaded with oxygen, it is called oxyhemoglobin, while hemoglobin that has released oxygen is called reduced hemoglobin or deoxyhemoglobin. As hemoglobin binds oxygen,...

Oxygen Delivering System II: Venturi Mask and Transtracheal Oxygen
2.4K
Oxygen therapy is a pivotal aspect of medical care, particularly for patients with respiratory ailments. Two prominent oxygen-delivering systems include the Venturi mask and the transtracheal oxygen catheter.
Venturi Mask
The Venturi mask, named after the Venturi effect, is designed to deliver precise oxygen concentrations. It consists of a large tube with an oxygen inlet that narrows down, causing a pressure drop that pulls air in through adjustable side ports. The mask is a lightweight,...

Oxygenic Photosynthesis
785
Oxygenic photosynthesis is a fundamental process in which light energy is harnessed to drive the oxidation of water, leading to the production of molecular oxygen (O₂), adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH). This process is essential for sustaining aerobic life on Earth and is primarily carried out by cyanobacteria, algae, and plants. The core of oxygenic photosynthesis lies in the thylakoid membranes, where chlorophyll pigments facilitate...

Group Therapy

Group therapy is a sociocultural approach to psychological treatment, where individuals with shared psychological challenges come together under the guidance of a mental health professional. This therapeutic modality offers unique opportunities for individuals to connect, share, and grow within the context of a supportive group. By fostering mutual understanding and collaboration, group therapy can address a range of psychological concerns effectively, often complementing or surpassing the...
