Long-term Depression01:05

Long-term Depression

33.3K
Long-term depression, or LTD, is one of the ways by which synaptic plasticity—changes in the strength of chemical synapses—can occur in the brain. LTD is the process of synaptic weakening that occurs over time between pre and postsynaptic neuronal connections. The synaptic weakening of LTD works in opposition to synaptic strengthening by long-term potentiation (LTP) and together are the main mechanisms that underlie learning and memory.

Boiling Point Elevation
The boiling point of a liquid is the temperature at which its vapor pressure is equal to ambient atmospheric pressure. Since the vapor pressure of a solution is lowered due to the presence of nonvolatile solutes, it stands to reason that the solution’s boiling point will subsequently be increased. Vapor pressure increases with temperature, and so a solution will require a higher temperature than will pure solvent to achieve any given vapor pressure, including one...

Depressants01:28

Depressants

450
Depressant drugs, including alcohol and sedative-hypnotics, diminish central nervous system activity by enhancing the action of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that reduces brain activity and promotes relaxation. These substances can have various therapeutic uses but also pose significant risks, especially when misused or combined.
Alcohol is a common depressant that can induce a sense of relaxation and reduced inhibition at low doses. Contrary to its occasional...

Cognitive Development During Adolescence

621
During adolescence, individuals experience significant cognitive development that enhances their understanding of others' emotions and thoughts, known as cognitive empathy. This period is marked by an increased ability to adapt to others' perspectives and a more nuanced understanding of others' mental states, a skill that is foundational for social problem-solving and conflict avoidance. The development of cognitive empathy relies heavily on the theory of mind — the...

Depression: Overview

891
Depression is a prevalent mental illness marked by persistent sadness and lack of interest in previously enjoyable activities. It can take several forms, including major depression, persistent depressive disorder, and bipolar I and II disorders. Symptoms range from emotional changes like chronic worry to physical changes like sleep disturbances and suicidal thoughts. From a neurobiological perspective, depression is believed to be triggered by abnormalities in the brain's prefrontal cortex,...

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Adolescent Health
  • Mental Health Research

Background:

  • Determining the current prevalence of depressive symptoms in German adolescents is crucial for public health.
  • Previous research may not fully capture the contemporary landscape of adolescent mental health in Germany.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To ascertain the prevalence of depressive symptoms among adolescents in Germany.
  • To identify psychosocial factors associated with depressive symptoms in this demographic.

Main Methods:

  • A representative sample of 1001 German adolescents (aged 12-17) was surveyed via telephone interviews in 2017.
  • The DesTeen instrument was utilized to assess depressive symptoms and psychosocial features within the preceding two weeks.

Main Results:

  • The point prevalence of depressive symptoms was 8.2% (95% CI [6.5; 9.9]) in adolescents aged 12-17.
  • Girls (11.6%) reported higher prevalence than boys (5.0%), a statistically significant difference (p<0.001).
  • Associated factors included female sex, older age, poor academic performance, lower interpersonal trust, negative body image, problematic social media/computer game use, and lower family functioning.

Conclusions:

  • A significant proportion of German adolescents experience depressive symptoms.
  • The study identified novel associations, including the link between adolescent depressive symptoms and problematic social media usage.
