  • Ischemic colitis (IC) is an acute intestinal inflammation, historically associated with the elderly and arteriosclerosis.
  • Recent reports indicate a rise in IC cases among younger individuals, necessitating a re-evaluation of risk factors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify risk factors for ischemic colitis (IC) across all age groups.
  • To compare and contrast these risk factors between elderly and non-elderly patient populations.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study involving 209 patients diagnosed with IC and 209 age- and sex-matched controls.
  • Data collected from December 2004 to March 2017 at Tokai University Hospital.
  • Multivariable conditional logistic regression analysis to identify significant risk factors.

Main Results:

  • Drinking, abdominal surgery, hypertension, and malignant diseases were identified as risk factors for IC in the overall cohort.
  • In non-elderly patients, hypertension and laxative/enema use were significant risk factors.
  • Elderly patients showed significant associations with abdominal surgery, hypertension, COPD, malignant disease, and antiplatelet drug use.

Conclusions:

  • Risk factors for ischemic colitis vary significantly between younger and elderly populations.
  • Hypertension emerges as a consistent risk factor across all age groups studied.
