    Summary

    Osteoarthritis (OA) synovial membranes show increased collagenolytic enzymes (CE) and proteoglycan-degrading enzymes (PE). This heightened enzyme activity, particularly serine proteases, suggests a role in OA joint tissue destruction and potential cartilage degradation.

    Background:

    • Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease characterized by cartilage breakdown.
    • Synovial inflammation plays a critical role in OA pathogenesis.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To quantify neutral collagenolytic enzyme (CE) and proteoglycan-degrading enzyme (PE) activities in OA synovial membranes.
    • To investigate the correlation between enzyme activity levels and the degree of synovial inflammation and hypertrophy in OA.
