Catatonia is a complex neuro-psychiatric syndrome often overlooked in clinical practice.
It can manifest across various medical, psychiatric, and drug-induced conditions.
Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective management.

Purpose of the Study:

To highlight the diagnostic challenges of catatonia.
To present a case study of a patient with prolonged, undiagnosed catatonia.
To emphasize the importance of multidisciplinary assessment in identifying catatonia.

Main Methods:

A comprehensive literature review on catatonia.
Detailed case report of a 64-year-old woman with severe functional impairment.
Multidisciplinary team assessment including neurology and neuropsychiatry.
Review of treatment response to electro-convulsive therapy and psychotropic medication adjustment.

Main Results:

The patient presented with a three-year history of severe communication and functional deficits, initially misdiagnosed.
A thorough multidisciplinary evaluation led to a diagnosis of catatonia.
