Distributions to Estimate Population Parameter01:26

Distributions to Estimate Population Parameter

5.1K
The accurate values of population parameters such as population proportion, population mean, and population standard deviation (or variance) are usually unknown. These are fixed values that can only be estimated from the data collected from the samples. The estimates of each of these parameters are sample proportion, the sample mean, and sample standard deviation (or variance). To obtain the values of these sample statistics, data are required that have particular distribution and central...

Model Approaches for Pharmacokinetic Data: Distributed Parameter Models

249
Pharmacokinetic models are mathematical constructs that represent and predict the time course of drug concentrations in the body, providing meaningful pharmacokinetic parameters. These models are categorized into compartment, physiological, and distributed parameter models.
The distributed parameter models are specifically designed to account for variations and differences in some drug classes. This model is particularly useful for assessing regional concentrations of anticancer or...

Transmission-based Precautions II: Airborne and Protective Environment

2.0K
Transmission-based precautions are for patients infected or suspected to be infected (or colonized) with organisms posing a significant risk to others. The transmission precautions include airborne and protective environment precautions.
Airborne precautions:
Use airborne precautions when treating patients known or suspected to have diseases that spread through the air—for example, tuberculosis or measles. These organisms are present in smaller droplets expelled by an infected person and...

What are Estimates?

8.8K
It isn't easy to measure a parameter such as the mean height or the mean weight of a population. So, we draw samples from the population and calculate the mean height or mean weight of the individuals in the sample. This sample data acts as a representative measure of the population parameter. These sample statistics are known as estimates.
The estimate for the mean of a sample is denoted by ͞x, whereas the mean of the population is designated as μ. Further, parameters such...

Wave Parameters

9.4K
The simplest mechanical waves are associated with simple harmonic motion and repeat themselves for several cycles. These simple harmonic waves can be modeled using a combination of sine and cosine functions. Consider a simplified surface water wave that moves across the water's surface. Unlike complex ocean waves, in surface water waves, water moves vertically, oscillating up and down, whereas the disturbance of the wave moves horizontally through the medium. If a seagull is floating on the...

One-Compartment Open Model: Wagner-Nelson and Loo Riegelman Method for ka Estimation01:24

One-Compartment Open Model: Wagner-Nelson and Loo Riegelman Method for ka Estimation

1.2K
This lesson introduces two critical methods in pharmacokinetics, the Wagner-Nelson and Loo-Riegelman methods, used for estimating the absorption rate constant (ka) for drugs administered via non-intravenous routes. The Wagner-Nelson method relates ka to the plasma concentration derived from the slope of a semilog percent unabsorbed time plot. However, it is limited to drugs with one-compartment kinetics and can be impacted by factors like gastrointestinal motility or enzymatic degradation.

Area of Science:

  • Signal Processing
  • Radar Systems Engineering
  • Statistical Signal Processing

Background:

  • Wideband echoes from linear frequency modulation (LFM) pulse radar are susceptible to noise interference, particularly impulsive noise found in alpha-stable distribution environments.
  • Accurate estimation of Doppler stretch and time delay is crucial for radar applications, but challenging in non-Gaussian noise conditions.
  • Existing methods often struggle with impulsive noise or require prior knowledge of noise characteristics.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To propose a novel method for estimating Doppler stretch and time delay of wideband echoes from LFM pulse radar.
  • To address the challenge of operating in alpha-stable distribution noise environments, characterized by impulsive interference.
  • To develop a robust algorithm that does not require a priori knowledge of the noise characteristics.

Main Methods:

  • Employs a combination of fractional Fourier transform and a tuneable Sigmoid transform.
  • Introduces two novel functions: a tuneable Sigmoid fractional correlation function (TS-FC) and a tuneable Sigmoid fractional power spectrum density (TS-FPSD).
  • Develops a novel algorithm based on the TS-FPSD for estimating Doppler stretch and time delay, with derivations for unbiasedness and consistency.

Main Results:

  • The proposed TS-FPSD method demonstrates boundness to symmetric alpha-stable (SαS) noise.
  • Derivation and closed-form computation of the Cramér-Rao bound indicate superior performance.
  • Simulation results and theoretical analysis confirm the method's applicability and effectiveness.

Conclusions:

  • The novel method effectively suppresses impulsive noise interference in alpha-stable distribution environments.
  • The proposed algorithm achieves higher estimation accuracy for Doppler stretch and time delay without needing prior noise knowledge.
  • The technique offers a significant advancement in radar signal processing for challenging noise conditions.
