    Background:

    • Near-death experiences (NDEs) are complex phenomena reported by individuals who have had close encounters with death.
    • Previous research on NDEs has primarily focused on adult populations, with limited data on pediatric survivors of critical illness.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the occurrence and characteristics of NDEs in children who have survived critical illnesses.
    • To compare pediatric NDEs with those reported in adults and explore potential neurophysiological underpinnings.

    Main Methods:

    • Nonselective interviews were conducted with 11 pediatric patients (ages 3-16) who survived critical illnesses (e.g., cardiac arrest, coma).
    • Patients reporting memories during unconsciousness were assessed for NDE elements.
    • A control group of 29 age-matched children who required intensive care unit (ICU) admission and treatment (intubation, narcotics, benzodiazepines) were interviewed.

    Main Results:

    • Seven of the 11 critically ill children reported NDEs, including out-of-body experiences, entering darkness, and tunnel sensations.
    • Three children recalled deciding to return to their physical bodies.
    • None of the 29 control patients reported any memories of unconsciousness, indicating a strong association between NDEs and critical illness survival in children.

    Conclusions:

    • Near-death experiences are associated with surviving critical illnesses in children.
    • The reported elements of pediatric NDEs are similar to those found in adult NDEs.
    • Childhood NDEs may represent a natural developmental experience, potentially triggered by dying or resuscitation processes, with a proposed neurophysiological basis.
