Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if nocturia is an independent risk factor for all-cause mortality in men.
  • To assess the association between nocturia frequency and mortality.
  • To explore the impact of sleep quality on this association.

Main Methods:

  • Observational analysis of 7343 men aged 50-75 from the REDUCE trial.
  • Cox proportional hazards models used to analyze baseline nocturia (≥3 voids/night) and mortality.
  • Confounding variables included demographics, medical history, lifestyle factors, and prostate characteristics; sleep quality was also assessed.

Main Results:

  • Nocturia was significantly associated with increased mortality risk (HR=1.72; 95% CI 1.15-2.55), independent of other factors.
  • When disturbed sleep was included in the model, the association's magnitude decreased (HR=1.43; 95% CI 0.93-2.19).

Conclusions:

  • Nocturia may represent an independent risk factor for mortality in men.
  • Sleep interruption due to nocturia could have long-term health consequences.
  • Targeted interventions for nocturia may be warranted to mitigate potential health impacts.
