Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are a rare cause of upper GI bleeding. This study reports the first clear visualization of a GIST tumor surface, termed "GISToscopy," aiding diagnosis.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Oncology
  • Surgical Endoscopy

Background:

  • Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are uncommon neoplasms.
  • Upper gastrointestinal bleeding is a frequent presentation of GIST.
  • Direct visualization of GISTs during endoscopy is challenging.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report the first successful direct visualization of a GIST tumor surface during upper endoscopy.
  • To highlight the utility of endoscopic visualization in diagnosing GIST.

Main Methods:

  • Upper endoscopy was performed in a patient presenting with upper GI bleeding.
  • The tumor surface was directly visualized and described.
  • Biopsy samples were obtained for histopathological confirmation.

Main Results:

  • A distinct, excavated, ulcerated lesion consistent with GIST was visualized.
  • The term "GISToscopy" is introduced to describe this direct visualization.
  • Pathologic diagnosis confirmed the presence of GIST.

Conclusions:

  • Direct endoscopic visualization of GIST surface is feasible.
  • "GISToscopy" can enhance diagnostic accuracy for GIST.
  • Biopsy during endoscopy is crucial for definitive GIST diagnosis.
