Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) shows promise for improving mood and reducing anxiety in individuals with dementia. This intervention may enhance self-compassion, offering a new approach for psychological distress in dementia care.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Clinical Psychology
- Neuroscience
Background:
- Limited evidence-based psychological therapies exist for dementia-related psychological distress.
- Depression and anxiety are common in individuals with dementia, impacting quality of life.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) intervention for people with dementia experiencing depression and/or anxiety.
- To assess the feasibility, acceptability, and utility of this adapted CFT intervention.
Main Methods:
- A mixed-methods multiple case series design with seven participants.
- Outcome measures assessed self-compassion, mood, anxiety, and quality of life pre-, mid-, and post-intervention.
- Thematic analysis of interviews and session rating forms evaluated acceptability and perceived changes.
Main Results:
- Improvements observed in mood, anxiety, and self-compassion during the intervention.
- Three out of six participants with depression moved out of the clinical range.
- Participants and carers reported increased self-compassion in the context of cognitive decline.
Conclusions:
- Compassion Focused Therapy is adaptable for individuals with dementia experiencing low mood or anxiety.
- The intervention shows potential for improving self-compassion, mood, and anxiety in this population.
- Further research with a larger pilot trial and comparator group is recommended to establish effectiveness.
