Epithelioid sarcoma, a rare soft tissue tumor, can occur in the head and neck. This case highlights its presentation in the temporal space, emphasizing the need for consideration in differential diagnoses of aggressive head lesions.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Radiology
- Pathology
Background:
- Epithelioid sarcoma is a rare malignant soft tissue tumor.
- Head and neck involvement is exceptionally uncommon.
- This report details a case originating in the temporal space.
Observation:
- A 35-year-old woman presented with a slow-growing temporal mass.
- Imaging revealed a lobulated, hypoechoic mass with internal vascularity (US) and heterogeneous signal intensity with necrosis and infiltration (MR).
- FDG-PET/CT showed intense uptake without metastasis.
Findings:
- Microscopic examination and immunohistochemistry confirmed epithelioid sarcoma.
- The tumor was surgically resected followed by radiation therapy.
- No recurrence was observed at 18 months post-treatment.
Implications:
- Epithelioid sarcoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of aggressive temporal space lesions.
- Heterogeneous imaging findings, including central necrosis and infiltration, are key indicators.
- While rare, head and neck epithelioid sarcoma requires careful radiological assessment and pathological confirmation.
