The Evidence for Evolution02:55

The Evidence for Evolution

48.3K
Genetic variations accumulating within populations over generations give rise to biological evolution. Evolutionary changes can result in the formation of novel varieties and entire new species. These changes are responsible for the diverse forms of life inhabiting the planet. The evidence for evolution suggests that all living organisms descended from common ancestors.

Convergent Evolution01:54

Convergent Evolution

33.0K
Evolution shapes the features of organisms over time, ensuring that they are suited for the environments in which they live. Sometimes, selection pressure leads to the rise of similar but unrelated adaptations in organisms with no recent common ancestors, a process known as convergent evolution.

Eukaryotic Evolution01:24

Eukaryotic Evolution

41.6K
The endosymbiont theory is the most widely accepted theory of eukaryotic evolution; however, its progression is still somewhat debated. According to the nucleus-first hypothesis, the ancestral prokaryote first evolved a membrane to enclose DNA and form the nucleus. Conversely, the mitochondria-first hypothesis suggests that the nucleus was formed after endosymbiosis of mitochondria.
Contrary to the endosymbiont theory, the eukaryote-first hypothesis proposes that the simpler prokaryotic and...

Synteny and Evolution02:31

Synteny and Evolution

3.8K
John H. Renwick first coined the term “synteny” in 1971, which refers to the genes present on the same chromosomes, even if they are not genetically linked. The species with common ancestry tend to show conserved syntenic regions. Therefore, the concept of synteny is nowadays used to describe the evolutionary relationship between species.
Around 80 million years ago, the human and mice lineages diverged from the common ancestor. During the course of evolution, the ancestral...

pre-mRNA Processing02:01

pre-mRNA Processing

57.6K
In eukaryotic cells, transcripts made by RNA polymerase are modified and processed before exiting the nucleus. Unprocessed RNA is called precursor mRNA or pre-mRNA to distinguish it from mature mRNA.
Once about 20-40 ribonucleotides have been joined together by RNA polymerase, a group of enzymes adds a “cap” to the 5’ end of the growing transcript. In this process, a 5’ phosphate is replaced by modified guanosine that has a methyl group attached to it (7-Methyl...

Pre-mRNA Processing: Modification of pre-mRNA Ends

In eukaryotic cells, transcripts made by RNA polymerase are modified and processed before exiting the nucleus. Unprocessed RNA is called precursor mRNA or pre-mRNA to distinguish it from mature mRNA.
Once about 20-40 ribonucleotides have been joined together by RNA polymerase, a group of enzymes adds a cap to the 5' end of the growing transcript. In this process, a 5' phosphate is replaced by modified guanosine that has a methyl group attached (7-methyl guanosine). This 5' cap helps...

Summary

Pre-Darwinian evolution is questionable, as it likely requires heritability and multiplication for natural selection to operate. Only Darwinian evolution could have led to such complexity, making pre-Darwinian evolution implausible.

Area of Science:

  • Origin of Life Studies
  • Evolutionary Biology
  • Systems Chemistry

Background:

  • Examines the plausibility of pre-Darwinian evolution scenarios.
  • Reviews open, far-from-equilibrium system-based models for life's origins.
  • Addresses the transition from chemistry to biology before Darwinian evolution.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Critically evaluate existing models of pre-Darwinian evolution.
  • Identify strengths and weaknesses of metabolism-first, replicator-first, and combined models.
  • Determine the plausibility of evolutionary processes preceding Darwinian evolution.

Main Methods:

  • Critical review of published research on pre-Darwinian evolution scenarios.
  • Analysis of eight crucial questions posed to researchers in the field.
  • Comparison of metabolism-first, replicator-first, and combined metabolism-replicator models.

Main Results:

  • Metabolism-first models face significant challenges with heredity and chirality.
  • Replicator-first models address heredity but struggle with chirality.
  • A combined metabolism-replicator model shows fewer issues, particularly with chirality, and suggests early Darwinian evolution.

Conclusions:

  • The concept of "pre-Darwinian evolution" is deemed questionable.
  • Evolutionary complexity requires multiplication and heritability for natural selection.
  • Only Darwinian evolution adequately explains the emergence of life's complexity.
