Sutures of the Skull01:22

Sutures of the Skull

10.4K
The human skull is composed of several bones that come together to protect the brain and support the structures of the face. The junctions where these bones meet are called sutures.
Sutures are immobile joints between adjacent bones of the skull. The narrow gap between the bones is filled with dense, fibrous connective tissue that unites the bones. The long sutures located between the skull bones are not straight but instead follow irregular, tightly twisting paths. These twisting lines tightly...

Attachment01:20

Attachment

527
Attachment is vital for infant development, as warm social interactions support growth and well-being. In a classic 1958 study by Harry Harlow, the significance of warmth and comfort in forming attachments was examined. Harlow separated newborn monkeys from their mothers and provided two artificial "mothers": one made of cold wire and the other covered in soft cloth. Despite the wire mother offering food, the infant monkeys preferred the comfort of the cloth mother, demonstrating that...

Attachment Styles01:24

Attachment Styles

442
Jeffrey Simpson's attachment theory suggests that early caregiver relationships shape lasting patterns of behavior and emotional regulation, known as attachment styles. These patterns are organized along two key dimensions: self-esteem and interpersonal trust. The intersection of these dimensions produces four primary attachment styles that typically persist throughout life and significantly influence how individuals form and maintain relationships.Secure Attachment StyleIndividuals with a...

Attachment of Sister Chromatids02:57

Attachment of Sister Chromatids

4.1K
As cells progress into mitosis, the nuclear envelope breaks down, and the condensed chromosomes are exposed to the array of bipolar microtubules of the mitotic spindle. The kinetochore, a large, disc-shaped protein complex, is present at the centromere region of the sister chromatids and acts as a binding site for the microtubules.  Usually, the plus-end of a single microtubule is embedded within the kinetochore. However, some kinetochores first establish lateral contact with the side-wall...

Theory of Romantic Attachment in Adulthood

50.0K
Attachment is a long-standing connection or bond with others. While Attachment Theory was conceived in developmental psychology to describe infant-caregiver bonding, it's been extended into adulthood to include romantic relationships.

Relationship with Parents: Attachment01:28

Relationship with Parents: Attachment

265
Parent-child interactions lay the foundation for how we understand relationships throughout life. These interactions are not uniform across families; instead, they are shaped by a range of environmental, emotional, and behavioral factors unique to each caregiver-child dynamic. Social psychologists study these early relationships to understand how patterns formed in infancy influence social functioning and interpersonal behavior in adulthood.Attachment Theory and Early Relational ModelsJohn...

Summary

The attachment method for OrthoFiber #5 to a toggle rod significantly impacts construct strength and stiffness. Construct D, with OrthoFiber #5 passed through the toggle rod eyelet, demonstrated superior load to failure and stiffness.

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Orthopedics
  • Biomaterials Science
  • Surgical Techniques

Background:

  • Coxofemoral luxation is a common orthopedic injury in animals.
  • Toggle-rod implants are used in surgical repair, but their biomechanical properties depend on suture attachment.
  • OrthoFiber #5 is a synthetic suture material used in orthopedic repairs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate how different methods of attaching OrthoFiber #5 to a 1/8-in Securos toggle rod affect the construct's mechanical properties.
  • To identify the optimal attachment method for enhanced stability and durability.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective, bench-top mechanical analysis was conducted.
  • 128 OrthoFiber #5-toggle rod constructs were prepared using 8 distinct attachment methods (16 constructs per group).
  • Constructs were tested in tension using a servohydraulic materials-testing machine to assess load to failure, cycles to failure, stiffness, and suture elongation.

Main Results:

  • Constructs D and G exhibited the highest mean load to failure (>500 N).
  • Constructs D and E demonstrated superior stiffness (53.52 N/mm and 53.6 N/mm, respectively).
  • Construct A showed the greatest elongation, while construct C had a higher cycles to failure compared to constructs A, B, and H.

Conclusions:

  • The method of attaching OrthoFiber #5 to the toggle rod significantly influences mechanical properties.
  • No single method excelled in all tested parameters, but construct D was superior in load to failure and stiffness.
  • Passing OrthoFiber #5 straight through the toggle rod eyelet (Construct D) may offer enhanced stability and fatigue resistance for coxofemoral luxation repairs.
