Summary

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) improved female sexual dysfunction (FSD) symptoms in women. Both dorsal genital nerve stimulation and posterior tibial nerve stimulation showed significant improvements in sexual functioning, suggesting TENS as a potential therapeutic tool.

Background:

  • Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) is a prevalent condition affecting women's quality of life.
  • Current treatment options for FSD have limitations, necessitating exploration of novel therapeutic approaches.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) for improving symptoms of FSD in women without bladder issues.
  • To investigate the impact of TENS on genital arousal deficits.

Main Methods:

  • A pilot study involving nine women with general FSD.
  • Participants received 12 sessions of either transcutaneous dorsal genital nerve stimulation (DGNS) or posterior tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS).
  • Sexual functioning was assessed using the Female Sexual Functioning Index (FSFI) and patient global impression of change (PGIC) surveys.

Main Results:

  • The average total FSFI score significantly increased from baseline across all participants after six and 12 sessions, and at study completion (p < 0.05).
  • Significant improvements were noted in the FSFI subdomains of lubrication, arousal, and orgasm.
  • No changes were observed in general health or bladder functioning surveys, but PGIC scores significantly increased.

Conclusions:

  • Transcutaneous stimulation of peripheral nerves, including DGNS and PTNS, shows potential as a therapeutic intervention for FSD.
  • TENS may be a valuable non-invasive tool for enhancing sexual function in women experiencing FSD.
