Conventional chondrosarcoma, a difficult-to-treat bone cancer, may respond to immunotherapy. A patient experienced pseudoprogression, a temporary increase in tumor size, before showing a near-complete response to nivolumab.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Immunotherapy
- Bone Tumors
Background:
- Conventional chondrosarcoma is a common adult bone malignancy.
- It is often resistant to traditional chemotherapy treatments.
- Metastatic disease presents significant treatment challenges.
Observation:
- A 67-year-old male with metastatic conventional chondrosarcoma received nivolumab.
- Initial restaging indicated increased tumor burden, leading to treatment discontinuation.
- This apparent progression was later identified as pseudoprogression.
Findings:
- The patient restarted nivolumab after the pseudoprogression diagnosis.
- He subsequently achieved a near-complete response to the immunotherapy.
- Conventional chondrosarcoma demonstrated sensitivity to checkpoint inhibitors.
Implications:
- Pseudoprogression is a critical factor in assessing treatment response for chondrosarcoma.
- Checkpoint inhibitors like nivolumab show potential in treating this deadly bone cancer.
- Further research into immunomodulatory agents for chondrosarcoma is warranted.
