Stereotype Threat and Self-fulfilling Prophecies02:09

Stereotype Threat and Self-fulfilling Prophecies

42.5K
When we hold a stereotype about a person, we have expectations that he or she will fulfill that stereotype. A self-fulfilling prophecy is an expectation held by a person that alters his or her behavior in a way that tends to make it true. When we hold stereotypes about a person, we tend to treat the person according to our expectations. This treatment can influence the person to act according to our stereotypic expectations, thus confirming our stereotypic beliefs. Research by Rosenthal and...

Expected Value01:15

Expected Value

7.8K
The expected value is known as the "long-term" average or mean. This means that over the long term of experimenting over and over, you would expect this average. The expected average is represented by the symbol μ. It is calculated as follows:

Threats to Biodiversity01:50

Threats to Biodiversity

27.1K
There have been five major extinction events throughout geological history, resulting in the elimination of biodiversity, followed by a rebound of species that adapted to the new conditions. In the current geological epoch, the Holocene, there is a sixth extinction event in progress. This mass extinction has been attributed to human activities and is thus provisionally called the Anthropocene. In 2019 the human population reached 7.7 billion people and is projected to comprise 10 billion by...

Determination of Expected Frequency01:08

Determination of Expected Frequency

2.6K
Suppose one wants to test independence between the two variables of a contingency table. The values in the table constitute the observed frequencies of the dataset. But how does one determine the expected frequency of the dataset? One of the important assumptions is that the two variables are independent, which means the variables do not influence each other. For independent variables, the statistical probability of any event involving both variables is calculated by multiplying the individual...

Increasing Function01:18

Increasing Function

397
An increasing function exhibits a rise in output values as input values increase. This behavior is depicted graphically as a curve or line that slopes upward from left to right. Such a function satisfies the condition that if x1 < x2, then f(x1) < f(x2), indicating that the function values grow with increasing inputs. This concept is fundamental in understanding growth trends across various domains, such as population dynamics, financial investments, or resource consumption.The...

Increased Body Temperature01:25

Increased Body Temperature

7.5K
A body temperature above  38°C  (100.4 °F) is known as fever or pyrexia, and a person with fever is termed 'febrile.' Typically, the hypothalamus, a part of the brain that acts as the body's thermostat, regulates body temperature through a thermoregulatory setpoint. It receives signals from cold and warm thermal receptors throughout the body and adjusts the body's temperature accordingly. Fever occurs when this hypothalamic setpoint is altered, usually in...

Summary

Fear generalisation in humans increases over time, similar to animal studies. A brief reminder of the original training cue before testing can reverse this time-dependent increase in fear generalisation.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Neuroscience
  • Anxiety Research

Background:

  • Excessive fear generalisation is a hallmark of clinical anxiety.
  • Animal studies suggest time enhances fear generalisation, while cue exposure can mitigate it.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the temporal dynamics of fear generalisation in humans.
  • To examine if cue reminder treatment affects time-dependent fear generalisation.

Main Methods:

  • Healthy participants underwent a fear conditioning paradigm with a neutral face cue and mild shock.
  • Groups differed in testing time (immediate vs. 1 week) and cue reminder exposure.
  • Shock-expectancy ratings measured fear generalisation.

Main Results:

  • Fear generalisation significantly increased from immediate to 1-week testing.
  • This temporal increase was not due to neuroticism or fear incubation.
  • Brief exposure to the training cue before 1-week testing eliminated the enhanced fear generalisation.

Conclusions:

  • Human fear generalisation is a dynamic process influenced by time.
  • Memory for stimulus details in fear conditioning can be reinstated with reminder treatments.
  • Findings offer insights into anxiety mechanisms and potential therapeutic interventions.
