Relative Risk01:12

Relative Risk

2.2K
Relative risk (RR) is a statistical measure commonly used in epidemiology to compare the likelihood of a particular event occurring between two groups. This metric is important for evaluating the relationship between exposure to a specific risk factor and the probability of a particular outcome. It plays a crucial role in medical research, public health studies, and risk assessment. Relative risk quantifies how much more (or less) likely an event is to occur in an exposed group compared to an...

Drugs for Treatment of Constipation-Predominant IBS

843
Pharmacological therapies for IBS-C are designed to alleviate abdominal discomfort and enhance bowel function. In patients with IBS-C, fiber supplements may help soften stools and decrease straining, but may also lead to increased gas production and bloating. Osmotic laxatives like milk of magnesia are frequently used to soften stools and increase stool frequency in IBS-C patients. In addition, two drugs approved for use in severe IBS-C adult cases are linaclotide (Linzess) and lubiprostone...

Factors Affecting the Risk of Infection01:26

Factors Affecting the Risk of Infection

13.5K
The hosts' susceptibility to infection depends on several factors. The integrity of the skin and mucous membranes helps protect the body against microbial attacks. When the skin is altered, the chance of infection, limb loss, and even death increases.
The integrity and count of the white blood cells help the body resist pathogens and fight infection. When impaired, it reduces the body's resistance to pathogens. The acidic pH levels of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary tracts, and skin...

Fixing Double-strand Breaks

14.8K
The double-stranded structure of DNA has two major advantages. First, it serves as a safe repository of genetic information where one strand serves as the back-up in case the other strand is damaged. Second, the double-helical structure can be wrapped around proteins called histones to form nucleosomes, which can then be tightly wound to form chromosomes. This way, DNA chains up to 2 inches long can be contained within microscopic structures in a cell. A double-stranded break not only damages...

Double Resonance Techniques: Overview01:12

Double Resonance Techniques: Overview

763
Double resonance techniques in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy involve the simultaneous application of two different frequencies or radiofrequency pulses to manipulate and observe two distinct nuclear spins. One important application of double resonance is spin decoupling, which selectively suppresses coupling with one type of nucleus while observing the NMR signal from another nucleus, simplifying the spectrum and enhancing resolution.
Spin decoupling is usually achieved by...

Summary

Behavioral aspects of defecation, not diet or exercise, significantly correlate with chronic constipation. Modifying habits like postponing or avoiding bowel movements may be key to treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Digestive Health
  • Behavioral Medicine

Background:

  • Chronic constipation is a common condition often managed with lifestyle changes.
  • Dietary habits, fluid intake, and exercise are typically recommended but may not be sufficient alone.
  • Literature on the impact of specific defecation habits on chronic constipation is limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between specific defecation habits and chronic constipation.
  • To identify behavioral factors contributing to the development or persistence of chronic constipation.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional observational study was conducted.
  • 415 eligible subjects from a tertiary hospital were randomly selected.
  • Questionnaires assessed demographics, medical history, constipation status (Rome III criteria), and lifestyle/defecation habits.

Main Results:

  • 24.3% self-reported constipation; 26.5% met Rome III criteria.
  • Constipation prevalence differed significantly by sex (5% men vs. 31% women).
  • Diet, fluid intake, and exercise were not significantly related to constipation; however, postponing (OR 1.94) or avoiding defecation outside the home (OR 2.38) showed significant correlations.

Conclusions:

  • Behavioral aspects of defecation are more strongly associated with chronic constipation than dietary habits.
  • Modifying poor defecation habits may represent a primary therapeutic approach for chronic constipation.
