  • A systematic literature search was conducted across multiple databases (PubMed, Medline, Web of Science, CINAHL, PyscINFO) up to March 31, 2017.
  • Studies were included if they used Design Thinking in health-related intervention development or implementation and provided outcome data.
  • Interventions were categorized as successful, mixed success, or not successful based on outcome data.

  • Twenty-four studies utilizing Design Thinking were analyzed across various physical and mental health conditions, and systems processes.
  • Twelve studies were successful, 11 showed mixed success, and one was not successful.
  • Design Thinking interventions demonstrated superior satisfaction, usability, and effectiveness compared to traditional interventions in four comparative studies.

Conclusions:

  • Design Thinking is applied across diverse healthcare settings and conditions, with varying degrees of success.
  • DT interventions show potential for usability, acceptability, and effectiveness, but methodological limitations exist.
  • Further research is recommended to isolate DT components and conduct comparative studies with traditional interventions.
