Background:

Neck pain frequently co-occurs with migraine and tension-type headaches.
Current literature is divided on whether this neck pain is a primary headache symptom or indicative of cervical musculoskeletal dysfunction.

Purpose of the Study:

To clarify the relationship between neck pain and headaches.
To guide research and clinical practice regarding the diagnosis and treatment of cervicogenic headaches.

Main Methods:

Critique of current diagnostic approaches for cervical musculoskeletal dysfunction in headache studies.
Proposal for revised diagnostic criteria focusing on objective measures of cervical function.

Main Results:

Existing measures like pain sensitivity and trigger points are insufficient for diagnosing cervical musculoskeletal disorders.
A comprehensive assessment including interrelated changes in cervical movement, joint, and muscle function is advocated.

Conclusions:

Standardized diagnostic criteria are needed to accurately define cervical musculoskeletal dysfunction in headache patients.
