Measurement: Standard Units03:38

Measurement: Standard Units

80.4K
Every measurement provides three kinds of information: the size or magnitude of the measurement (a number), a standard of comparison for the measurement (a unit), and an indication of the uncertainty of the measurement. While the number and unit are explicitly represented when a quantity is written, the uncertainty is an aspect of the errors in the measurement results.

Nursing Implementation01:15

Nursing Implementation

6.2K
Implementation is the execution of the nursing care plan developed during the planning phase.
The five steps to implementing effective nursing care include reassessing the patient, reviewing and revising the existing nursing care plan, organizing the resources and care delivery, anticipating and preventing complications, and implementing nursing interventions.

Measurement: Derived Units

55.6K
The International System of Units or SI system, by international agreement, has fixed measurement units for seven fundamental properties: length, mass, time, temperature, electric current, amount of substance, and luminosity. These are called the SI base units.

Drug Dosing: Geriatric Patients01:15

Drug Dosing: Geriatric Patients

274
Elderly individuals encompass a diverse population with varying degrees of age-related physiological changes. Defining the elderly presents challenges, as the geriatric population is often arbitrarily categorized as individuals older than 65. However, many individuals in this group lead active and healthy lives, with an increasing number surpassing 85 years and falling into the older elderly category. Physiological changes associated with aging impact performance capacity and homeostatic...

Exercise Stress Test01:26

Exercise Stress Test

1.3K
Introduction
Exercise stress testing, commonly known as a treadmill test, is a noninvasive procedure used to evaluate cardiovascular function and diagnose heart conditions.
Definition
An exercise stress test measures the heart's response to exertion using a treadmill or stationary bicycle. Chest electrodes record the heart's electrical activity through an ECG, and blood pressure is monitored regularly.

Pharmacodynamics in Geriatric Patients: Effects of Age01:27

Pharmacodynamics in Geriatric Patients: Effects of Age

238
Age-related pharmacokinetic changes are extensively documented, but understanding age-related pharmacodynamic alterations is relatively limited. This knowledge gap can be partly attributed to the complexity of developing appropriate measures of drug responses compared to bioanalytical methods for determining drug concentrations. Most information regarding age-related differences in human pharmacodynamics originates from cross-sectional studies. However, these studies assume that observed mean...

Area of Science:

  • Geriatric Medicine
  • Physical Therapy
  • Hospital Management

Background:

  • Hospitalization can lead to functional decline in older adults.
  • The SPecific Retraining in INTerdisciplinarity (SPRINT) program aims to prevent this decline.
  • SPRINT involves patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the feasibility of implementing the SPRINT program in a Geriatric Assessment Unit (GAU).

Main Methods:

  • Healthcare professionals in the GAU were trained on the SPRINT program.
  • Patients were evaluated for eligibility and exercise allocation by a physiotherapist.
  • Quantitative and qualitative data on adherence, barriers, and facilitators were collected via questionnaires.

Main Results:

  • SPRINT was implemented in 19 out of 50 patients during a three-month pilot study.
  • An average of one daily exercise session per patient was conducted, primarily with nurses, physicians, or independently by the patient.
  • Caregiver participation was low (4%), and barriers/facilitators were identified.

Conclusions:

  • The SPRINT program demonstrates relevance and applicability within GAUs.
  • Future studies are recommended to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of SPRINT in preventing hospital-related functional decline.
