Multicenter study of mortality in achondroplasia

Mortality in achondroplasia has decreased, but remains higher than the general population. Causes of death have shifted towards cardiovascular and accidental events, necessitating increased clinical awareness and patient counseling.

- While childhood mortality has decreased, this improvement lags behind that of the general population.
Conclusions:
- Causes of death in achondroplasia have shifted, with a decline in sudden deaths, pneumonia, and hydrocephalus, offset by an increase in cardiovascular/cerebrovascular and accidental deaths.
- Clinicians must recognize the elevated risk of accidental deaths, particularly vehicular accidents, and provide appropriate counseling to patients.
- Despite survival improvements, achondroplasia patients continue to experience higher mortality, underscoring the need for ongoing monitoring and management strategies.
