This review evaluates treatments for dental hypomineralization, such as Molar-Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH) and Dental Fluorosis (DF). Effective treatments identified include fluoride varnishes for MIH and microabrasion for DF.
Area of Science:
- Dentistry
- Biomaterials Science
- Regenerative Medicine
Background:
- Dental hypomineralization, including Molar-Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH), amelogenesis imperfecta, and dental fluorosis (DF), results from defects in enamel maturation leading to insufficient mineralization.
- These conditions are prevalent in dental practice, necessitating an analysis of effective treatment strategies.
Purpose of the Study:
- To systematically review and evaluate the effectiveness of various treatments for different forms of dental hypomineralization.
Main Methods:
- A comprehensive literature search was conducted across major databases (PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Embase) up to May 2018.
- Studies published in English, Spanish, and Portuguese were included, with methodology quality assessed using the Cochrane Handbook.
Main Results:
- Out of 7895 initial references, 33 studies were included in the systematic review.
- Reported treatments encompassed desensitizing/remineralizing products, resin infiltration, restorations, fissure sealants, tooth bleaching, enamel microabrasion, and nutritional supplements.
- Effective treatments identified include arginine pastes or fluoride varnishes for MIH and tooth bleaching and/or enamel microabrasion for DF.
Conclusions:
- While results are promising, a need for methodological uniformity exists to develop clinical guidelines for dental hypomineralization treatments.
- Specific effective treatments were identified for MIH and DF, offering guidance for clinical application.
