Relationship Formation02:12

Relationship Formation

46.2K
What do you think is the single most influential factor in determining with whom you become friends and whom you form romantic relationships? You might be surprised to learn that the answer is simple: the people with whom you have the most contact. This most important factor is proximity. You are more likely to be friends with people you have regular contact with. For example, there are decades of research that shows that you are more likely to become friends with people who live in your dorm,...

Standard Deviation01:10

Standard Deviation

27.8K
The most commonly used measure of variation is the standard deviation. It is a numerical value measuring how far data values are from their mean. The standard deviation value is small when the data are concentrated close to the mean, exhibiting slight variation or spread. The standard deviation value is never negative, it is either positive or zero. The standard deviation is larger when the data values are more spread out from the mean, which means the data values are exhibiting more variation.

Mean Absolute Deviation01:13

Mean Absolute Deviation

3.3K
The mean absolute deviation is also a measure of the variability of data in a sample. It is the absolute value of the average difference between the data values and the mean.
Let us consider a dataset containing the number of unsold cupcakes in five shops: 10, 15, 8, 7, and 10. Initially, calculate the sample mean. Then calculate the deviation, or the difference, between each data value and the mean. Next, the absolute values of these deviations are added and divided by the sample size to...

In the field of psychology, there are several ways to organize measurements of a trait, feature, or characteristic (i.e., variables). Qualitative data, such as ethnicity, can be tabulated into a frequency count to provide information about the proportion, as well as the variety of groups in a sample or population. On the other hand, researchers can perform a wider set of calculations on quantitative data. The mean, mode, and median, for instance, are central tendency measures to identify a...

Ending Relationships01:28

Ending Relationships

189
The dissolution of intimate relationships presents complex emotional and psychological challenges, particularly when emotional bonds are strong, the relationship is long-standing, and perceived alternatives are limited. This distress often intensifies in romantic breakups, where the initiator may experience greater turmoil than the rejected partner. Contributing factors include residual attachment, guilt over causing pain, and uncertainty about how to manage the situation. The stress is further...

Standard Deviation of Calculated Results01:14

Standard Deviation of Calculated Results

8.6K
Standard deviation measures the spread of data around the mean value. Many large data sets follow a Gaussian distribution, also known as a normal distribution. This distribution is bell-shaped curved, with the most frequently observed value (mean or central value) in the middle. The farther away from the central value, the greater the deviation from the central value, and the lower the frequency.
A broad Gaussian distribution curve has a wider standard deviation, representing a data set with...

Summary

Sensory strabismus, an eye misalignment, is common in retinitis pigmentosa (RP). Reduced binocular visual field area is a key risk factor for developing sensory strabismus in RP patients.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Neuroscience
  • Genetics

Background:

  • Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a group of inherited retinal diseases characterized by progressive vision loss.
  • Peripheral visual field loss is an early symptom, while central vision loss and sensory strabismus occur in later stages.
  • The relationship between ocular deviation and visual function in RP patients requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between ocular deviation and visual function in patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP).
  • To identify risk factors for sensory strabismus in individuals with RP.
  • To determine if visual field characteristics predict ocular alignment in RP.

Main Methods:

  • Assessed ocular deviation at near and far distances in 119 RP patients.
  • Evaluated central visual field using mean deviation (MD) and visual acuity (VA).
  • Measured residual binocular field area using Goldmann perimetry (GP) in 33 patients.

Main Results:

  • Significant horizontal ocular deviation (>10°) at near distance was observed in 30% of patients and correlated with residual visual function.
  • A residual Goldmann perimetry (GP) area of <40 cm² was a significant predictor of larger horizontal ocular deviation at far distance (P=0.04).
  • No specific cut-off value for central visual function effectively predicted ocular deviation.

Conclusions:

  • Visual function is negatively associated with ocular deviation in retinitis pigmentosa (RP) patients.
  • A binocular visual field area less than 40 cm² indicates a high risk for sensory strabismus.
  • Ocular alignment screening is recommended for RP patients with severe vision loss.
