Mitochondrial DNA G15927A and G15928A variations in patients with multiple sclerosis

This study investigated mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variations G15927A and G15928A in an Iranian Multiple Sclerosis (MS) population. Neither variation showed a significant association with MS in the studied group.

Purpose of the Study:

- The combined G15927A or G15928A variations were found in 11% of MS cases and 7% of controls (P=0.3).
- Individually, G15927A was present in 1% of cases and 3% of controls (P=0.3).
- G15928A was present in 10% of cases and 4% of controls (P=0.09), showing a non-significant trend.
Conclusions:
- Neither the G15927A nor the G15928A mtDNA variation was significantly associated with Multiple Sclerosis in the Iranian population studied.
- The findings suggest these specific mtDNA variations are unlikely to be major risk factors for MS in this demographic.
