Background:

Altered dermatoglyphics are observed in children with clefts.
Predictive markers in prior generations can aid genetic counseling and preventive strategies for cleft anomalies.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify dermatoglyphic variations in parents of children with clefts.
To establish dermatoglyphic markers for predicting cleft occurrence in offspring.

Main Methods:

Dermatoglyphic prints were collected from 400 parents (25-45 years) in two groups: parents with cleft children (Group A) and parents with healthy children (Group B).
Analysis included pattern types, total ridge count (TRC), a-b ridge count, atd angle, and asymmetry.

Main Results:

Significant differences in pattern types, TRC, a-b ridge count, and atd angle were found between Group A and Group B.
Absence of the t point was noted in mothers of children with clefts.

Conclusions:

Dermatoglyphics serve as a valuable tool for studying developmental instability in cleft anomalies.
Findings provide data for assessing the genetic etiology of clefting and inform potential predictive measures.
