    Summary

    Hepatocellular adenomas do not lack Kupffer cells, contrary to previous beliefs. These liver tumors contain phagocytic Kupffer cells, suggesting other factors cause their appearance on scans.

    Background:

    • Hepatocellular adenomas typically appear as defects on technetium-99m-sulfur colloid liver scans.
    • This observation has been historically attributed to an absence of Kupffer cells within these tumors.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence and quantity of Kupffer cells in hepatocellular adenomas.
    • To determine if Kupffer cell deficiency explains the imaging defects observed in liver scans.

    Main Methods:

    • Seven hepatocellular adenomas were analyzed using immunoperoxidase staining for lysozyme, a marker for mononuclear phagocytes.
    • Kupffer cell counts were performed within the tumors and in adjacent non-neoplastic liver tissue.
