Self-Schemas02:16

Self-Schemas

36.3K
In general, a schema is a mental construct consisting of a cluster or collection of related concepts (Bartlett, 1932). There are many different types of schemata, and they all have one thing in common: schemata are a method of organizing information that allows the brain to work more efficiently. When a schema is activated, the brain makes immediate assumptions about the person or object being observed.

Impact of Schemas

215
Schemas are cognitive structures that provide a framework for interpreting and organizing social information. They help individuals navigate complex environments by offering expectations about people, events, and behaviors. Schemas influence attention, encoding, and retrieval processes, thereby shaping the entire trajectory of information processing in social contexts.Attention and Cognitive LoadDuring initial attention, schemas function as filters that prioritize schema-consistent information,...

What is a Mode?01:07

What is a Mode?

26.0K
The mode is one of the commonly used measures of a central tendency. It is defined as the most frequent value in a data set.
There can be more than one mode in a data set if multiple values have the same highest frequency. For instance, suppose that the Statistics exam scores of 20 students are: 50; 53; 59; 59; 63; 63; 72; 72; 72; 72; 72; 76; 78; 81; 83; 84; 84; 84; 90; 93. Here, the mode is 72, as it occurs most frequently, five times.
A data set with two modes is called bimodal. For example,...

Ventilatory Modes

1.5K
Mechanical ventilators are life-saving devices that support or replace spontaneous breathing. They deliver breaths to patients through varying methods known as ventilator modes. Understanding these modes is critical for healthcare providers managing patients with respiratory failure.
There are three ventilatory modes: full support, partial support, and spontaneous. These are described below.
Full Support Modes
Full support modes include controlled mechanical ventilation, continuous mandatory...

Modes of Standing Waves - I01:03

Modes of Standing Waves - I

4.0K
A close look at earthquakes provides evidence for the conditions appropriate for resonance, standing waves, and constructive and destructive interference. A building may vibrate for several seconds with a driving frequency matching the building's natural frequency of vibration; this produces a resonance that results in one building collapsing while the neighboring buildings do not. Often, buildings of a certain height are devastated, while other taller buildings remain intact. This...

Summary

Schema therapy modes, crucial for personality disorder treatment, were analyzed. A hierarchical structure of internalization, externalization, and compulsivity modes was identified, validating their link to personality traits.

Area of Science:

  • Clinical Psychology
  • Psychopathology
  • Personality Psychology

Background:

  • Schema therapy utilizes modes as a central concept for treating personality disorders.
  • Understanding the structure of these modes is essential for effective therapeutic interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To comprehensively assess 20 modes within schema therapy.
  • To explore the higher-order structure of these modes.
  • To investigate the relationship between mode factors, the generic schema factor, and basic personality traits.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized the German Extended Schema Mode Inventory (GE-SMI) with N = 533 inpatients.
  • Conducted item-level confirmatory factor analyses on GE-SMI scales.
  • Performed scale-level exploratory factor analysis to identify hierarchical mode structures.
  • Regressed mode factor scores on Big Five personality factors and the generic schema factor.

Main Results:

  • Item-level analyses suggested unidimensionality for 16 out of 20 GE-SMI scales.
  • Exploratory factor analysis revealed three hierarchically structured mode factors: internalization, externalization, and compulsivity.
  • Mode factor scores were significantly linked to the Big Five factors and the generic schema factor, supporting their validity.

Conclusions:

  • The study identified a hierarchical structure of schema therapy modes.
  • Findings support the validity of these mode factors in relation to personality traits.
  • The hierarchical mode structure has implications for psychopathology classification and clinical treatment strategies.
