Biodiversity and Human Values01:24

Biodiversity and Human Values

17.1K
Human civilization relies on biodiversity in many ways. Sudden changes in species biodiversity result in environmental changes that can modify weather patterns and therefore human civilizations.

Professional Values01:29

Professional Values

10.7K
Nurses are responsible for caring for patients during birth, death, illness, and healing. Professional values guide the decisions and actions that nurses make in their careers. If nurses know the decisions and actions to take, providing patients with exceptional care is possible.
The values that are the foundation of the nursing profession are altruism, autonomy, human dignity, and social justice.
First, altruism refers to the concern for the welfare and well-being of others without personal...

Attachment01:20

Attachment

522
Attachment is vital for infant development, as warm social interactions support growth and well-being. In a classic 1958 study by Harry Harlow, the significance of warmth and comfort in forming attachments was examined. Harlow separated newborn monkeys from their mothers and provided two artificial "mothers": one made of cold wire and the other covered in soft cloth. Despite the wire mother offering food, the infant monkeys preferred the comfort of the cloth mother, demonstrating that...

Critical Values01:31

Critical Values

10.3K
A critical value is a definite value obtained from a particular probability distribution at a predecided confidence level (or a predecided significance level) for a given population parameter. The critical value provides demarcation that separates the sample statistics that are likely to occur from the ones that are unlikely to occur based on the given probability distribution and the population parameter to be estimated. The critical value for normal distribution is obtained from the z...

Uncertainty in Measurement: Reading Instruments

52.0K
Counting is the type of measurement that is free from uncertainty, provided the number of objects being counted does not change during the process. Such measurements result in exact numbers. By counting the eggs in a carton, for instance, one can determine exactly how many eggs are there in the carton. Similarly, the numbers of defined quantities are also exact. For example, 1 foot is exactly 12 inches, 1 inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters, and 1 gram is exactly 0.001 kilograms. Quantities...

z Scores and Unusual Values01:07

z Scores and Unusual Values

11.0K
The z score is one of the three measures of relative standing. It describes the location of a value in a dataset relative to the mean. z scores are obtained after the standardization of the values in a dataset. The z score for the mean is 0.
This score indicates how far a value is from the mean in terms of standard deviation. For example, if a data value has a z score of +1, the researcher can infer that the particular data value is one standard deviation above the mean. If another data...

Summary

Social exclusion did not increase object anthropomorphism in hoarding disorder. However, perceiving objects as human-like boosted their sentimental and instrumental values, strengthening attachment.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Behavioral Science

Background:

  • Hoarding disorder is characterized by intense object attachment, driven by sentimental and instrumental values.
  • Social exclusion may prompt individuals to anthropomorphize objects to fulfill needs for belonging.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if social exclusion increases object anthropomorphism in individuals with hoarding tendencies.
  • To examine the relationship between anthropomorphism, object values, and object attachment.

Main Methods:

  • 331 participants with excessive acquisition tendencies were randomly assigned to social exclusion, inclusion, or overinclusion conditions.
  • Participants interacted with objects possessing human characteristics and completed assessments of anthropomorphism, object values, and attachment.

Main Results:

  • Socially excluded participants did not anthropomorphize objects more than included participants.
  • Increased anthropomorphism was associated with higher sentimental and instrumental values of objects.
  • Higher object values predicted stronger attachment to objects.

Conclusions:

  • Sentimental and instrumental values mediate the relationship between anthropomorphism and object attachment.
  • Understanding anthropomorphism may offer insights into the mechanisms of object attachment in hoarding disorder.
