Empathy02:34

Empathy

10.1K
Some researchers suggest that altruism operates on empathy. Empathy is the capacity to understand another person’s perspective, to feel what he or she feels. An empathetic person makes an emotional connection with others and feels compelled to help (Batson, 1991). Empathy can be expressed in several ways, including cognitive, affective, and motor.

Chest Physiotherapy01:24

Chest Physiotherapy

1.8K
Chest Physiotherapy (CPT) is a therapeutic technique used in respiratory care to improve ventilation, clear bronchial secretions, and enhance the efficiency of respiratory muscles. This therapy includes three primary procedures: postural drainage, percussion, and vibration. It can be performed on spontaneously breathing patients and those who are intubated and mechanically ventilated.
Purpose
CPT is primarily used for patients with excessive bronchial secretions who have difficulty clearing...

Cardiomyopathy VII: Pre and Post Operative Nursing Management

353
Patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction who remain symptomatic despite optimal medical therapy may undergo a septal myectomy (Morrow procedure). This procedure involves excising a portion of the hypertrophied septum below the aortic valve using a heart-lung machine to improve blood flow through the LVOT. Effective preoperative and postoperative nursing management ensures successful patient outcomes, minimizes complications, and...

Imaging Studies III: Gastrointestinal Motility Studies and Virtual Colonoscopy

422
This lesson explores three gastrointestinal imaging techniques: radionuclide testing, colonic transit studies, and virtual colonoscopy.
Radionuclide Testing
Radionuclide testing is a sophisticated medical technique for assessing gastrointestinal motility. It focuses on gastric emptying and colonic transit time. Radioactive markers track the movement of food through the digestive system, providing insights into gastrointestinal disorders.
In gastric emptying studies, a meal's liquid and...

Student t Distribution01:31

Student t Distribution

14.2K
The population standard deviation is rarely known in many day-to-day examples of statistics. When the sample sizes are large, it is easy to estimate the population standard deviation using a confidence interval, which provides results close enough to the original value. However, statisticians ran into problems when the sample size was small. A small sample size caused inaccuracies in the confidence interval.
The Student t distribution was developed by William S. Goset (1876–1937) of the...

Virtual Work01:20

Virtual Work

1.4K
The principle of virtual work states that if a body is in static and dynamic equilibrium, then the sum of all the virtual work done by all external forces and couple moments for any given virtual displacement must be zero.
In static equilibrium, a body can experience an imaginary or virtual movement, such as displacement or rotation. The virtual work done by a force is equal to the dot product of force and virtual displacement in the direction of the force. When it comes to virtually rotating a...

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Cultural Competency Training
  • Physiotherapy Education

Background:

  • Cultural empathy is crucial for effective healthcare delivery.
  • Physiotherapy students require training in cultural competence to address diverse patient needs.
  • Traditional methods may not adequately prepare students for culturally complex patient interactions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of a virtual cultural simulation and guided reflection on physiotherapy students' intrapersonal and interpersonal cultural empathy.
  • To assess student satisfaction with this innovative learning approach.

Main Methods:

  • A single-cohort study involving physiotherapy students at an Australian university.
  • Utilized a virtual cultural simulation where students role-played a patient in a developing country, followed by guided online reflection.
  • Measured intrapersonal empathy using the Comprehensive State Empathy Scale (CSES) and interpersonal empathy via the Theory of Planned Behaviour:Cultural Competence Questionnaire (TPB:CCQ).

Main Results:

  • Significant improvement in intrapersonal cultural empathy (CSES scores increased post-simulation).
  • The intervention group showed enhanced 'Perceived Behavioural Control' in interpersonal empathy (TPB:CCQ).
  • Students reported high satisfaction with the virtual cultural simulation experience (mean SCSES score 71%).

Conclusions:

  • Virtual cultural simulation combined with guided reflection effectively boosts intrapersonal cultural empathy in physiotherapy students.
  • This method shows promise in influencing interpersonal cultural empathy.
  • The learning experience was highly rated by students, indicating its value in cultural competency development.
