Ibuprofen treatment for leukocytospermia did not significantly affect key semen parameters like sperm concentration or motility. This study found no adverse impact on semen quality in men receiving ibuprofen.
Area of Science:
- Reproductive Medicine
- Andrology
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Previous research suggested ibuprofen might affect testicular function, but ex-vivo studies showed no impact on spermatogenic cells or follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH).
- The effect of ibuprofen on clinical semen parameters in men has not been previously assessed.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the impact of ibuprofen on semen parameters in men diagnosed with leukocytospermia.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective chart review of 64 men with leukocytospermia who received a 3-week course of ibuprofen (1800 mg/day).
- Semen analyses were performed before and after the ibuprofen treatment period.
- Evaluated parameters included semen volume, sperm concentration, motility, total motile count (TMC), and forward progression.
Main Results:
- 51 men completed post-treatment semen analyses.
- No significant differences were observed in semen volume, sperm concentration, motility, TMC, or forward progression between pre-treatment and post-treatment assessments.
- Morphology was excluded due to standardization issues between assessment criteria.
Conclusions:
- A 3-week course of ibuprofen (1800 mg/day) did not demonstrate a significant adverse impact on semen parameters in men with leukocytospermia.
- Key semen parameters, including sperm concentration and motility, remained stable post-treatment.
