  • Limited research exists on the specific relationship between neuromuscular function and functional balance in firefighters.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between neuromuscular function and functional balance performance in career firefighters.
  • To identify specific neuromuscular parameters that predict functional balance.
  • To inform targeted interventions for improving firefighter safety and performance.

Main Methods:

  • Fifty career firefighters completed isometric leg strength tests (peak torque, rapid torque variables).
  • Functional balance was assessed using a performance index (PI) based on completion time.
  • Statistical analyses included partial correlations and multiple regression, controlling for age and body fat percentage (%BF).

Main Results:

  • Later rapid torque variables (100-200ms) and peak torque were significantly associated with functional balance performance (r = -0.501 to -0.315) after controlling for covariates.
  • Age, %BF, and absolute rapid torque at 100ms (aTQ100) explained 42-50% of the variance in functional balance performance.
  • Lower rapid strength, older age, and poorer body composition correlated with worse functional balance.

Conclusions:

  • Neuromuscular function, particularly rapid strength, is a key determinant of functional balance in firefighters.
  • Interventions aimed at enhancing rapid muscle strength and improving body composition may positively impact firefighter balance.
  • These findings are especially relevant for aging firefighters, suggesting strategies to mitigate age-related declines in balance.
