1Department of Pediatric Surgery, Children's Hospital of Soochow University, Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, China.
This case study highlights a rare neonatal hepatic hemangioma. Surgical intervention was successful, emphasizing the need for advanced imaging and further research into propranolol for massive cases.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Surgery
- Neonatal Medicine
- Diagnostic Imaging
Background:
- Hepatic hemangioma is a rare pediatric tumor, particularly in neonates.
- This study details a unique case of hepatic hemangioma in an 18-day-old infant.
Observation:
- An infant presented with jaundice and an abdominal mass.
- Imaging revealed a giant hemangioma in the left hepatic lobe, measuring approximately 92x71x68 mm.
Findings:
- Initial treatment with propranolol showed no regression of the hepatic mass.
- Surgical resection was successfully performed, leading to a good outcome.
Implications:
- Advanced imaging is crucial for diagnosing infantile hepatic hemangioma.
- While propranolol is effective for some hemangiomas, its role in massive hepatic hemangiomas requires further investigation.
- Surgical management remains a viable option for large hepatic hemangiomas unresponsive to medication.
