Area of Science:

  • Rheumatology
  • Complementary and Alternative Medicine

Background:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a prevalent global inflammatory joint disease.
  • Chronic pain associated with RA often prompts patients to explore complementary therapies.
  • Acupuncture is a frequently considered complementary therapy for pain relief in RA.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture for managing rheumatoid arthritis.
  • To synthesize evidence from systematic reviews on acupuncture's impact on RA.

Main Methods:

  • Conducted a comprehensive search of the Epistemonikos database, a large repository of systematic reviews.
  • Included systematic reviews that analyzed data from randomized controlled trials.
  • Performed meta-analysis and applied the GRADE approach for evidence assessment.

Main Results:

  • Identified 7 systematic reviews encompassing 20 randomized controlled trials.
  • The synthesized data suggests acupuncture has a limited or negligible effect on rheumatoid arthritis.

Conclusions:

  • Acupuncture is unlikely to provide significant benefits for patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Current evidence indicates minimal impact of acupuncture on rheumatoid arthritis symptoms.
