Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in water infiltrating through different permeable pavement systems.
  • To determine if permeable asphalt, pervious concrete, and permeable interlocking concrete pavers affect SVOC concentrations.
  • To investigate the relationship between chemical properties and SVOC detection frequencies.

Main Methods:

  • Water samples were collected from a research permeable parking lot over three years.
  • Semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) were analyzed using established methods.
  • Statistical analyses, including Kaplan-Meier estimation and Spearman rank order, were applied to the data.

Main Results:

  • 22 out of 76 analyzed SVOCs were detected with frequencies of 10% or greater.
  • Porous asphalt showed statistically significant differences in median SVOC concentrations compared to concrete pavers.
  • Porous asphalt exhibited significant correlations between detection frequency and chemical attributes like molecular weight and log KOW.

Conclusions:

  • Porous asphalt acts as a source for low molecular weight/log KOW SVOCs and a sink for high molecular weight/log KOW SVOCs.
  • No significant SVOC infiltration patterns were observed for the two types of permeable concrete.
  • Permeable pavement type significantly influences the behavior of SVOCs in infiltrated stormwater.
