  • Previous research indicated exogenous attention-induced transfer occurred at high contrasts via response gain.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the influence of voluntary, endogenous spatial attention on perceptual learning.
  • To determine if endogenous attention induces location transfer in perceptual learning.
  • To elucidate the gain mechanism (contrast vs. response gain) underlying endogenous attention-induced perceptual learning.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-six participants completed an orientation discrimination task with either valid endogenous spatial precues (attention group) or neutral precues (neutral group).
  • Training occurred at two locations, with post-training tests at trained and untrained locations.
  • Stimulus contrast varied trial-by-trial (2% to 64%), and performance was analyzed using Weibull psychometric functions.

Main Results:

  • Both groups showed performance improvements at trained locations, primarily at the threshold level (contrast gain).
  • The neutral group exhibited location specificity, with improvements only at trained locations.
  • The attention group demonstrated significant location transfer, with similar threshold reductions at both trained and untrained locations.

Conclusions:

  • Endogenous spatial attention, similar to exogenous attention, induces location transfer in perceptual learning.
  • Unlike exogenous attention's effect on response gain, endogenous attention influences perceptual learning via contrast gain.
  • Voluntary attention plays a key role in generalizing perceptual learning beyond trained locations.
