Summary

High ruminators experience more stress-induced rumination and show reduced functional connectivity (FC) reactivity in the cognitive control network (CCN). This suggests impaired brain network integration for emotion regulation in frequent ruminators.

  • Stressful situations can trigger rumination, but the relationship between functional connectivity (FC) and rumination remains unclear.
  • Existing research shows mixed findings regarding the impact of rumination on brain network connectivity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate differences in state rumination levels after stress induction between high and low trait ruminators.
  • To examine corresponding changes in functional connectivity (FC) within the cognitive control network (CCN) and dorsal attention network (DAN).
  • To explore the relationship between stress-induced changes in FC and state rumination levels.

Main Methods:

  • Recruited 23 high and 22 low trait ruminators for resting-state functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) measurements.
  • Administered the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) to induce acute stress.
  • Measured changes in resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) within and between CCN regions before and after TSST.

Main Results:

  • Stress successfully induced state rumination in both groups, with a more pronounced effect in high trait ruminators.
  • High trait ruminators exhibited elevated baseline FC within the CCN but showed an attenuated increase in FC post-stress.
  • Increased FC within the CCN negatively correlated with state rumination levels.

Conclusions:

  • High trait ruminators demonstrate a blunted FC response within the CCN following acute stress.
  • This lack of FC reactivity may indicate reduced neural integration for emotion regulation and cognitive control in individuals prone to rumination.
  • Findings highlight potential neural mechanisms underlying the adverse health effects associated with high rumination.
