Contact Angle01:13

Contact Angle

19.7K
When a solid is dipped inside a liquid, the liquid surface becomes curved near the contact. For some solid–liquid interfaces, the liquid is pulled up along the solid, while for others, the liquid surface is convex or depressed near the solid surface. This phenomenon can be explained using the concept of cohesive and adhesive forces.
The adhesive force is the molecular force between molecules of different materials, that is, between the molecules of the solid and the liquid. The cohesive...

Contact-dependent Signaling01:19

Contact-dependent Signaling

47.0K
Contact-dependent signaling, as the name suggests, requires that communicating cells be in direct contact with each other. This is achieved either through receptor-ligand interactions or by specialized cytoplasmic channels that allow the flow of small molecules between cells. In animal cells, channels called gap junctions facilitate contact-dependent signaling in certain tissues, whereas, plasmodesmata perform a similar function in plants.

In animal cells, gap junctions are formed...

Overview of Advanced Functional Groups

29.9K

Functional groups are groups of atoms with specific chemical properties that occur within organic molecules and are sometimes denoted as “R”. Functional groups can “functionalize” a compound by enabling it to adopt different physical and chemical properties.
Types of Advanced Functional Groups
The table below summarizes some of the major functional groups in organic chemistry.

Metal ions can be separated from one another by complexation with organic ligands–the chelating agent– to form uncharged chelates. Here, the chelating agent must contain hydrophobic groups and behave as a weak acid, losing a proton to bind with the metal. Since most organic ligands used in this process are insoluble or undergo oxidation in the aqueous phase, the chelating agent is initially added to the organic phase and extracted into the aqueous phase. The metal-ligand complex is...

Sample Preparation for Analysis: Advanced Techniques

1.4K
Accurate analysis of complex samples often requires advanced preparation techniques to achieve reliable and reproducible results. Samples containing inorganic or organic materials can be challenging to dissolve or decompose effectively. Standard sample preparation methods include acid digestion, fusion, dry ashing, and wet digestion.
Acid digestion with strong acids is commonly used to dissolve inorganic materials that are insoluble (do not dissolve) in water. This method can be useful for...

Transmission-based Precautions I: Contact, Enteric, and Droplets

4.6K
Transmission-based precautions are for patients known to be infected or suspected to be infected or colonized with organisms that pose a significant risk to others. Some transmission-based precautions include contact, enteric, and droplet.
Contact Precautions:
Contact precautions are the measures taken to prevent the transmission of infectious agents, especially epidemiologically important microorganisms such as MRSA or influenza, primarily transmitted through direct or indirect contact with an...

Summary

Dermabond Advanced (DBA) can cause severe contact dermatitis (CD) in 7% of patients, particularly on the trunk and limbs. Avoid DBA in patients with acrylate allergies to prevent cross-reactions.

Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Dermatology
  • Adverse Event Monitoring

Background:

  • Dermabond Advanced (DBA) is a widely used topical skin adhesive.
  • Severe contact dermatitis (CD) is a potential adverse effect of DBA.
  • Understanding DBA-induced CD is crucial for patient safety.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize and determine the incidence rate of CD following DBA use.
  • To evaluate the safe application parameters for DBA.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study of 100 consecutive female patients undergoing breast reconstruction.
  • DBA was applied to the trunk and limbs post-reconstruction.

Main Results:

  • Seven percent (7%) of patients developed CD.
  • Four patients experienced CD after the second DBA application, suggesting sensitization.
  • One patient allergic to cosmetic glue showed potential cross-reactivity to acrylates.

Conclusions:

  • DBA may be inadequate for dry, low-barrier areas like the trunk and limbs, potentially causing irritant and allergic CD.
  • Frequent DBA use can increase sensitization risk.
  • DBA should be avoided in patients with a history of acrylate allergies due to cross-reactivity concerns.
