Severe hypothyroidism can rarely cause supraventricular tachycardia, a type of heart arrhythmia. Prompt thyroxine replacement normalized heart rhythm, suggesting a direct link between hypothyroidism and this cardiac condition.
Area of Science:
- Endocrinology
- Cardiology
Background:
- Thyroid disease is prevalent and impacts multiple organ systems, including the cardiovascular system.
- Hypothyroidism typically presents with bradycardia and conduction abnormalities, but arrhythmias are less common.
Observation:
- A patient presented with presyncope and supraventricular tachycardia.
- The patient was diagnosed with severe hypothyroidism.
Findings:
- Treatment with thyroxine replacement led to biochemical normalization and resolution of the supraventricular tachycardia.
- This suggests a potential etiological role for hypothyroidism in causing supraventricular tachycardia.
Implications:
- This case highlights a rare but significant association between hypothyroidism and supraventricular tachycardia.
- It underscores the importance of considering thyroid dysfunction in patients presenting with cardiac arrhythmias, even those typically associated with hyperthyroidism.
