    Background:

    • Interferons (IFNs) are critical cytokines in the innate immune response against viral infections.
    • Quantifying normal interferon levels in human populations is essential for understanding immune status.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the baseline interferon (IFN) levels in normal human sera.
    • To establish a reference range for IFN titers in a healthy population.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized a cell culture-based assay using KB cells to detect the protective effect of serum against vesicular stomatitis virus-induced cytopathic effect (CPE).
    • Assessed serum dilutions from 1/10 to 1/80 to quantify interferon activity.

    • 40% of sera showed protective effects at 1/10 dilution, 30% at 1/20, and 19% at 1/40.
