Hair cells are the sensory receptors of the auditory system—they transduce mechanical sound waves into electrical energy that the nervous system can understand. Hair cells are located in the organ of Corti within the cochlea of the inner ear, between the basilar and tectorial membranes. The actual sensory receptors are called inner hair cells. Summary

A rare feline bone tumor, characterized by giant cells and oval cells, was identified in a Persian cat. Metastasis to the liver and spleen was confirmed, highlighting the aggressive nature of this osseous neoplasm.

Background:

  • A four-year-old Persian cat presented with progressive lameness.
  • A rigid osseous mass was detected in the left arm.

Observation:

  • Histopathology revealed two distinct cell populations: multinucleated giant cells and oval cells.
  • These cells were embedded in a fibro-osseous stroma with lamellar bone trabeculae.
  • Necropsy showed multiple metastatic nodules in the liver and spleen.

Findings:

  • Tumor cells infiltrated the liver and spleen, consistent with metastasis.
  • Neoplastic cells showed no immunoreaction to CD68, desmin, alpha smooth muscle actin, S100, CD20, CD3, and pancytokeratin.
  • A few cells exhibited vimentin reactivity, suggesting fibroblast-like properties.

Implications:

  • This case describes a rare, aggressive osseous neoplasm in a feline patient.
  • The findings contribute to understanding feline bone tumor behavior and metastasis.
  • Further research may elucidate the specific cell of origin and optimal treatment strategies for such tumors.
