Ankle Joint01:10

Ankle Joint

3.0K
The ankle is formed by the talocrural joint (crural = leg). It consists of the articulations between the talus bone of the foot and the distal ends of the tibia and fibula of the leg. The superior aspect of the talus bone is square-shaped and has three areas of articulation. The top of the talus articulates with the inferior tibia. This is the portion of the ankle joint that carries the body weight between the leg and foot. The sides of the talus are firmly held in position by the articulations...

Traumatic Memory01:20

Traumatic Memory

583
Emotionally traumatic events often lead to memories that are exceptionally vivid and enduring, sometimes persisting with remarkable clarity throughout an individual's life. A classic example of this phenomenon is a person who survives a car accident. Even years later, they may recall every detail of the event with startling accuracy — the screeching of the tires, the jarring impact, and the acrid smell of burning rubber. Such vividness contrasts sharply with how an individual...

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder01:27

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

558
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric condition that arises following exposure to traumatic events such as natural disasters, forced displacement, or severe accidents. It significantly impairs individuals' ability to cope with daily activities and disrupts their emotional and psychological equilibrium.
Symptoms and Behavioral Manifestations
A spectrum of distressing symptoms characterizes PTSD. Recurrent flashbacks, where individuals involuntarily relive traumatic events,...

Self-Presentation: Self-Monitoring and Self-Handicapping

44.8K
People can go to great lengths to protect their self-image and present themselves in ways that they want others to see them. Sociologist Erving Goffman presented the idea that a person is like an actor on a stage. Calling his theory dramaturgy, Goffman believed that we use “impression management” to present ourselves to others as we hope to be perceived. Each situation is a new scene, and individuals perform different roles depending on who is present (Goffman, 1959). Think about...

Summary

False aneurysms after ankle inversion trauma are rare. This case highlights successful ultrasound-guided thrombin injection for treating a lateral malleolar artery false aneurysm, leading to full recovery.

Area of Science:

  • Vascular Surgery
  • Radiology
  • Trauma Medicine

Background:

  • False aneurysms are uncommon complications following ankle inversion trauma.
  • Persistent, painful ankle swelling can indicate underlying vascular injury.

Observation:

  • A 40-year-old male presented with persistent, painful ankle swelling post-inversion trauma.
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) revealed a false aneurysm from the lateral malleolar artery, a branch of the anterior tibial artery.

Findings:

  • Ultrasound confirmed the presence of the false aneurysm.
  • Ultrasound-guided thrombin injection was employed as the treatment modality.
  • The patient experienced an uneventful recovery post-intervention.

Implications:

  • This case demonstrates the efficacy of minimally invasive treatment for rare post-traumatic false aneurysms.
  • Early diagnosis and targeted intervention, such as thrombin injection, can lead to favorable outcomes.
  • Highlights the importance of considering vascular injury in persistent ankle swelling after trauma.
