Background:

Environment-friendly practices reduce energy consumption, resource use, and pollution.
Environment-friendly hospitals save energy, decrease carbon emissions, and improve quality.
Operating rooms (ORs) are major sources of hospital waste, making them key targets for sustainable practices.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify and recommend feasible environment-friendly practices for operating rooms (ORs) in Turkey.
To assess the current state of sustainable practices within Turkish ORs.

Main Methods:

Face-to-face interviews were conducted with OR nurses in Izmir Province, Turkey.
An OR identification form and the Greening the OR Checklist were used to collect data.
The study included 18 ORs across 11 participating hospitals.

Main Results:

83.3% of ORs monitored waste, and 88.9% recycled batteries.
72.2% renewed surgical sets and preferred reusable over single-use materials.
Significant gaps were identified: 66.7% lacked environmental teams, 93% didn't use safe surface cleaners, and many lacked sensor lights (83.3%) and LED lighting (66.7%).

Conclusions:

OR nurses actively implement some environmental practices despite the absence of dedicated teams.
There is a need to implement more comprehensive environment-friendly strategies, including energy-efficient technologies and dedicated environmental teams, in Turkish ORs.
