    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence of viral infections in neonates at Ga-Rankuwa Hospital.
    • To identify common viruses and their shedding patterns in this population.

    Main Methods:

    • Faecal specimens from 122 infants were analyzed using electron microscopy.
    • RNA analysis was performed on detected rotavirus strains.

    Main Results:

    • 40% of neonates were excreting virus; rotavirus was most common (33.5%).
    • Small round viruses (SRVs) were found in 12.3% of infants.
    • Most rotavirus infections occurred in infants under 7 days old, with limited shedding after 21 days; only 8% showed clinical signs.

    Conclusions:

    • Rotavirus and SRV infections are common in the Ga-Rankuwa Hospital Neonatal Unit.
    • Rotavirus infection appears endemic in this neonatal population.
    • Asymptomatic viral shedding is frequent among infected neonates.
