Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify demographic and clinical factors associated with adherence to antihypertensive medication among Korean patients.
  • To inform strategies for improving hypertension management and control.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 1,523 Korean patients with hypertension was recruited from urban and metropolitan healthcare facilities.
  • Medication adherence was assessed using the pill count method (≥80% as good adherence).
  • Sociodemographic, lifestyle, and clinical data were analyzed using chi-square and t-tests, with logistic regression for adherence predictors.

Main Results:

  • Good adherence to antihypertensive medication was observed in 81.7% of patients.
  • Factors associated with good adherence included older age (≥65 years), regular exercise, treatment at metropolitan hospitals, use of multiple antihypertensive medication classes, and concomitant diabetes medication.
  • A family history of hypertension or cardiovascular disease was also linked to better adherence, while high salt intake correlated with poor adherence.

Conclusions:

  • Multiple antihypertensive medication classes, concomitant medications, and regular exercise are positively associated with good adherence.
  • High salt intake is a significant factor associated with poor adherence to antihypertensive therapy.
  • These identified factors are crucial for developing targeted interventions to enhance hypertension control.
