    Summary

    Bacillus laterosporus, previously considered nonpathogenic, caused severe eye infections and meningitis in rabbits after experimental inoculation. This opportunistic bacterium can cause serious disease in compromised hosts.

    • The induced conditions included panophthalmitis, corneal perforation, orbital cellulitis, and meningitis.

    Findings:

    • The isolated Bacillus laterosporus strain demonstrated significant pathogenicity in a rabbit model.
    • Intravitreal inoculation resulted in a spectrum of severe inflammatory and infectious complications.
    • The rabbit model successfully replicated the severe disease observed in the human patient.
