Background:

Disaster nursing competency is crucial for effective response.
Existing educational programs may not adequately prepare nursing students for disaster scenarios.
There is a need to evaluate targeted educational interventions for nursing students.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the impact of a structured educational program on disaster nursing competency in Korean nursing students.
To evaluate improvements in knowledge, triage skills, and readiness.

Main Methods:

A quasi-experimental design with a nonequivalent control group.
60 junior nursing students were assigned to an experimental (n=30) or control (n=30) group.
The program followed the International Council of Nurses framework, covering all disaster stages.

Main Results:

The experimental group demonstrated significant increases in disaster nursing knowledge (p < 0.001).
Significant improvements were observed in disaster triage skills (p = 0.002) and disaster readiness (p < 0.001) compared to the control group.

Conclusions:

The developed disaster educational program effectively enhanced disaster nursing competency among nursing students.
This program serves as a useful intervention strategy for improving nursing students' preparedness for disasters.
