Background:

  • Opsite film is a common wound dressing, but its efficacy in preventing corneal abrasion during major surgery is not well-documented.
  • Corneal abrasion is a risk during major surgical procedures, particularly liver transplantation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the effectiveness of Opsite film with wet gauze versus Opsite film with wet gauze and eye ointment for eye protection.
  • To evaluate the prevention of corneal abrasion in patients undergoing living donor liver transplantation (LDLT).

Main Methods:

  • Prospective, double-blinded, randomized controlled trial involving 41 patients undergoing liver transplantation.
  • One eye protected with sterile gauze soaked in normal saline and covered with Opsite; the other eye received Duratears ointment before wet gauze and Opsite.
  • Corneal examinations performed pre- and post-surgery using fluorescein staining.

Main Results:

  • No corneal epithelial defects were observed in any of the 82 eyes studied.
  • Both the normal saline group and the ointment group demonstrated complete protection against corneal abrasion.

Conclusions:

  • Opsite film combined with wet gauze, with or without eye ointment, provides 100% protection against corneal abrasion.
  • This protective strategy is effective for patients undergoing living donor liver transplantation (LDLT).
