A patient with vision loss due to neuroretinitis, caused by Toxocara infection from raw meat, fully recovered after steroid and albendazole treatment.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Infectious Diseases
- Parasitology
Background:
- Neuroretinitis presents with optic disc edema and macular star exudates.
- Sudden, unilateral, painless vision loss can indicate optic nerve or retinal issues.
- Consumption of raw meat is a known risk factor for parasitic infections.
Purpose of the Study:
- To report a case of neuroretinitis secondary to Toxocara infection.
- To describe the clinical presentation and diagnostic findings.
- To evaluate the efficacy of combination therapy for ocular toxocariasis.
Main Methods:
- Clinical case presentation with detailed ophthalmological examination.
- Serological testing for Toxocara antibodies.
- Treatment with a combination of corticosteroids and albendazole.
Main Results:
- The patient exhibited optic disc edema and macular star exudates.
- Serological tests confirmed Toxocara infection.
- Combination therapy led to improved visual acuity and resolution of retinal signs.
Conclusions:
- Neuroretinitis can be a presenting sign of ocular toxocariasis.
- Prompt diagnosis and treatment with steroids and albendazole are effective.
- Awareness of raw meat consumption as a risk factor is crucial for diagnosis.
