  • Extremely preterm (EPT) neonates (≤28 weeks) face the highest risk, while moderately preterm (MPT) infants (28-34 weeks) represent a significant portion of NICU admissions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze NEC incidence and risk factors across different gestational age groups in a regional perinatal center.
  • To identify specific risk factors for NEC in moderately preterm infants compared to extremely preterm infants.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective data analysis of NEC cases within a single regional perinatal center.
  • Comparison of NEC incidence and associated maternal and infant factors across EPT, MPT, and late-preterm/term infant cohorts.

Main Results:

  • NEC incidence was 10% in EPT, 7% in MPT, and 0.7% in late-preterm/term infants.

  • Tailoring NEC prevention strategies based on gestational age-specific risk factors is crucial for clinical practice.
